Black Moth Super Rainbow recently bulletined on their MySpace Page that they got KanYe West’s blessing on his blog here.  Now, I don’t know if this means they’ve “arrived” (whatever that means).  But, it definitely means people are listening.  And, the number of BMSR listeners seems to be gaining momentum.

Matter of fact, they will be hitting Austin on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, to play The Mohawk at 8PM as part of their tour in support of Eating Us (which hits stores next Tuesday).

And, in what seems to be some synchronicity, you can try to win tickets to that show in  the Birds East Concert Series giveaway for Birds Barbershop that we had the privelege of announcing yesterday.  Scroll up to 20 Questions for Michael Portman [Birds Barbershop] Part 2 — Austin to get the details for that giveaway and for 2 additional contest giveaway opportunities or click here.

BMSR have there own contest running in select indie record stores (Good Records in Dallas is included;  last month Mandrake FM covered their 9th Birthday Bash  here).  Get more details on the Black Moth Super Rainbow In-Store Stands & Hairy CD Contest here

 * * *

1. For those who don’t know, what’s the Black Moth Super Rainbow experience on record? And on stage? On record, it’s usually one uncomfortable person making lots of mistakes and on stage, it’s 5 or 6.   These days you can smell or touch our records and, hopefully, see some video you haven’t seen before at the shows.

2. How is the new release, Eating Us, different from the previous, Dandelion Gum? It was a new approach.  Instead of just me doing it pretty much by myself, I did that, and then brought the almost finished record to Fridmann to redo parts and take care of the final mixing.  Mainly, you notice it in the way the drums were recorded and the overall width of the sound.  So, it’s hi-fi as opposed to mid-fi or lo-fi or whatever it usually is considered.

3. Why do you think you’ve struck such a chord with music fans and gained such a following? I think the 30 – 40 fans I have like my legs.  I’ve been doing a lot more jogging lately and that’s reflected in the new fans coming on.

4. I notice the accompanying booklet contains 16 pages of art and your previous album had interesting cover art as well.  Why is (booklet) art like this important to the overall Black Moth Super Rainbow aesthetic, musically and otherwise? I feel like bands who aren’t completely involved in their art only have half a vision.   To me, the pictures sometimes can define what the music will sound like.  Most of the CDs that I held onto from when I was first getting into music are the ones with the best art.

5. Outside of being from “deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania” and an “[above-the-trees] organic aural concoction,” what is (a) Black Moth Super Rainbow? Mistake after mistake coming together to get lucky.  That organic aural concoction quote sounds ridiculous.  It’s really meant to be whatever the listener wants it to be.

Single and Listening

So, I normally do two of these a month.  I’m pushing it close to the wire this month.  I will post one today and one tomorrow.  Enjoy.

In this edition, I review Demi Lovato’s, Ciara’s, and Keri Hilson’s latest.  Demi sings alone, though the Jonas Brothers brought some writing and producing assist.  And Ciara hosts JT while Keri hosts KanYe West and Ne-Yo.  I will say one thing about Keri Hilson and that is that I’m diggin’ her 2009 update on Sheila E.’s ’80s look.  Not sure if Ms. E. is a true inspiration, but Keri’s rockin’ a hot look, regardless.

Demi Lovato “Don’t Forget” Released:  March 16, 2009
From Latest Release:   Don’t Forget ♫♪

Sounds like this girl has a lot of potential to be the next angst-filled rock chick ala’ Alanis Morissette or someone like that.  There’s grit in her voice that I like.  Good for the Disney set, but has cross-over potential all over it.  I predict great things to come from this one. (Hey, she’s a Disney kid.  How wrong can I be?  Britney and Christina, anyone?)

Ciara “Love Sex Magic” featuring Justin Timberlake Released: March 17, 2009 From Forthcoming Release:  Fantasy Ride ♫♪
I want to not like this because I think JT tries way too hard to be cool and to be Michael Jack, but it is catchy.  Not something I haven’t heard before, but a good imitation.  My dancing bones wouldn’t be able to resist the groove.  I’d have to give in to the “Love Sex Magic.”

Keri Hilson “Knock You Down” featuring KanYe West and Ne-Yo
Released:  March 20, 2009
From Latest Release:  In a Perfect World… ♫♪
It’s good, but it sounds like a mixture of previous work from Beyonce’, Rhianna, and KanYe West and Ne-Yo, who do guest on the track.  Seems like producers and writers rule over artists, though Hilson did write on the track with a slew of other writers.  Can tell it is one of those songs that the more you hear it the more you’ll get into it.

12. I want my fans to:  Grow with me.  Also, to remember the first time they ever bought a piece of music and think about how that made them feel…then put my record on. :-)
13. If I could share one thing about myself it would be:  I’ve got sooooooooo much more music inside of me that I feel like my head is going to explode…so…STAY TUNED….
14. Wild Card I can’t wait to get to Austin and do my show!  I’ve wanted to come to SXSW for 4ever! :)
15. I want my musical legacy to be:  She meant every word she sang, got better and better at her craft, and really went for it on stage.

Enjoy the track, “I’m So Okay,” from her debut album New Voice.  Go to her official site for more.

Kendra Ross’ favorite old school joint!

Editor’s Note:  Kendra Ross chose a challenging old school joint.  I couldn’t find anything official out there in the way of a music video.  Maybe, there wasn’t one.  So, this was the best option.

Consider this the 2008 MTV VMAs Edition of Single and Listening.  I know it’s a little late in coming, but the songs are all still fresh as they were debuted as performances at this year’s MTV VMAs a few weeks ago on September 7, 2008.  Christina Aguilera and P!nk also performed, but their songs had debuted before the VMAs and I reviewed them in the last edition of Single and Listening.  This time around, I review the Jonas Brothers’, T.I.’s, and KanYe West’s latest offerings.

The Jonas Brothers “Love Bug” From Latest Release:  A Little Bit Longer Released:  August 12, 2008 ♫♪

My first introduction to the Jonas Brothers was all that blog, periodical, and TV fodder.  I had no idea who they were, where they came from, or that they were Disney product.  Now they’ve graduated to the big leagues with a number 1 album (Disney is becoming quite a musical force) and an MTV VMA 2008 performance.  I actually like this ditty.  Lyrically, it’s a nice sentiment.  I wonder if the parents who buy this stuff for their kids like to listen to it, too, or are really buying it for themselves.  I’m not a parent and I’m diggin’ it.  I like the slow start and hard pick-up.  That’s what I enjoyed about the MTV VMA performance as well.  The changes in setting and aesthetic for both parts (of song and performance) are a nice tribute to the past while embracing the present.  Original?  No.  But, it feels good to my ear.

T.I. featuring Rihanna “Live Your Live” From Latest Release:  Paper Trail  Released:  September 30, 2008 ♫♫

When I saw this performance I thought it was Rihanna featuring T.I.  Researching it now for this review, I find it’s actually the other way around.  Interesting tidbit.  Who knew Rihanna would be That (Next) Chick?  Anyway, the minute the performance started I loved it.  Re-listening to it now, still diggin’ it.  Party anthem!  The groove and “lift your hands up in the air from left to right” factors are through the roof.  Not sure how true the performance is to the album version, but even the short intro, sampling O-zone’s 2004 hit, “Dragostea Din Tei,” origin of the viral Numa Numa Dance video on the internet, is bananas.  The minute the crowd heard this song they went wild.  If I was in that crowd, I’d be getting my crowd participation on hard, too.

KanYe West “Love Lockdown” From Upcoming Release:  808s and Heartbreak ♫♪

Actors want to direct. Directors want to act.  Singers want to rap and rappers want to sing.  Another example, in a long line, of rappers trying their hand at talk-singing.  I must say that KanYe pulls it off. Simple melody and the chorus is a little too repetitive, yes, but it’s catchy and has a nice old school new wave sound to it, or just old school somethin’ sound. Seems that KanYe has been experimenting with an overall 80s affect of late.  He did get the prime spot of closing the show, which is not too shabby.  On a second listen, there does seem to be some lyrical meat.   Nice delivery and great sing-along quality.  Me likes.
