popolio.com hosts One Year Anniversary Mixer
An evening of celebration and networking
with live music, appetizers, and wine

AUSTIN, TX  popolio.com, which sits under the umbrella organization of Dallas-based Mandrake Arts & Media that started with MandrakeSocietyRadio.com, announces its One Year Anniversary Mixer.  The Austin-based pop music blog, popolio.com, which debuted on September 15, 2008, features a hodgepodge of local, regional, national, and international content.  The free event takes place on Friday, September 18, 2009, at Phara’s Mediterranean Cuisine at 111 East N. Loop from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The venue is BYOB and, therefore, only those 21 years of age and/or older may attend.  In conjunction, Mandrake Society Radio will be celebrating its Four Year Anniversary the next day in Dallas.  More details will be provided as they become available.

Special Guest, local power pop musician, Phil Dutra, will perform a short acoustic set. Though an open event, guests are asked to RSVP for a headcount.  Appetizers, wine, and cake will be provided.  Guests may order dinner on their own.  A limited amount of goodie boxes including the CDs of Featured popolio.com Artists and other items will be gifted to first attendees.

The evening is set to be an intimate, low-key, informal networking event not only for popolio.com fans but for all Austin-area blog and music enthusiasts and creators.  Background music will set the tone, but conversation will take the forefront.  Mostly, guests are asked to help celebrate popolio.com’s one year existence and anticipate its second year.

popolio.com kicked off last year presenting itself as an online music magazine more than a blog. The blog set itself apart from other pop blogs by dedicating itself to original entertainment content and not gossip and operating on the underground, independent, and mainstream levels.  Creating its own definition for “pop music, ” popolio.com embraces multiple genres such as Latin, R&B, and hip hop as well as pop.  Its features include online and podcast artist interviews, show pictures, streamed songs, music reviews, and music video countdowns highlighting Austin- and Texas-based content.

SXSW, ¡Pachanga! Latino Music Festival, and, more recently, Premios Texas 2009 Artists have been featured on popolio.com pop quiz interviews. These artists include Austin and Texas artists David Garza, Vallejo, Maneja Beto, Los Bad Apples, and Bobby Pulido.  On the national level, Grammy Winner Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes’ posthumous release, Eye Legacy, was featured with a podcast interview with her brother, Ron Lopes, and a MY TOP 10:  Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes Video Countdown.  Maryland-based SXSW Artist and 2009 Grammy Nominee Wayna’s Higher Ground featured with pop quiz and podcast interviews with the artist.  Canadian Jennie Laws and London-based Welsh artist, Bright Light Bright Light (formerly SXSW Artist Rod Thomas) have also been featured.

Singer-Songwriter Phil Dutra was the first artist to be interviewed for the popolio podcast feature at popolio.com on September 24, 2008, at https://popolio.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/interview-with-phil-dutra/.  According to his MySpace Page and Official Site, “Phil sounds like the love child of REM and Barenaked Ladies on a hit of XTC.”  His song “Let Me Be Your Superman” from his latest EP release, Right Behind the Rain, was chosen “Track of the Day” at the influential web site GarageBand.com and “She Walks Away,” another song from the same set, won the National Michael Lloyd Song Contest at the TAXI Road Rally held in Hollywood, California.

So, folks seemed to have trouble with the first question of the first set of 3 trivia questions for 2 tickets to Premios Texas 2009 next Thursday.  I really do want someone to win, so I ‘m giving a clue to Number 1.  Here are all 3 questions once again.  First to email me the correct answers wins 2 tickets to the event.

1. The Vallejo brothers also occasionally perform as an ’80s rock cover band here in Austin.  What is the name of their ’80s cover band?

CLUE:  The cover band’s favorite Austin venue is quite possibly The Yellow Rose (yes, the strip club), but they performed their most recent show at Adifest II at The Mohawk in June.

2. Premios Nominee, Reyli Barba, was the lead singer of what Latin pop rock band in the early ’90s?

3. Which Premios Nominee holds the record as the artist that has won the most Premios Los Nuestros Awards, with a total of 24?

Once again:  Email the answers with your full name and a phone number to popolio[dot]com[at]gmail[dot]com by noon on  Wednesday, August 12, 2009.

August 5, 2009 UPDATE:  So, there was no winner for the first set of trivia questions (see below).  Had 2 people come really close, but they couldn’t get Number 1 correct.  Vallejo and Vallejo Brothers are in the question, so it is not the answer.  I’m looking for another name altogether for their cover band.

And, admittedly, I’m no mathmatician.  Originally, the first pop quiz was going to post 1 week earlier.  In doing my calendar math, I still thought I had five weeks ’til the event, but it’s only four. You’ll still get 5 pop quizzes, though.  The last 2 will just post the same day or on one day and then the next.  That would be next week for those who are good at math!  Since, it goes down next Thursday.  I’m so excited.

Anyway, I’m just going to extend the first trivia contest and, hopefully, I can get a winner.  I’m also throwing in another 3 trivia questions for 2 more FREE TICKETS.  Hopefully, folks will find these questions easier.  And, those 2 of you that came really close, can go for these, instead.

So, both contests will continue, and I need the answers by noon next Wednesday, August 12, 2009, for both set of questions.  The same person cannot win both sets of tickets.  First to get me the answers for either wins.

The second set of questions are:

1. In what year were the Premios Texas Awards presented for the very first time?

2. Premios Texas 2009 will be televised nationally on what network?

3. Which Premios Texas 2009 Nominee’s last three Spanish-language albums have all consecutively peaked at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Latin Album chart?

Remember, email the answers with your full name and a phone number to popolio[dot]com[at]gmail[dot]com.  Check out the pop quizzes and good luck!

M_BSMPicked this up on Saturday.  Again, at Target.  My favorite CD-pick-up-store.  I really wanted to fall in love with this because I’ve fallen in love with “Pretty Wings.”  But, alas, I did not.  I think it may be one of those slow romances where I will fall in the end.  For now, I am intrigued and still want to check things out some more.  So, there will be repeat listens.  The two standout tracks for me right now are 3 and 4.  Those are the aforementioned, “Pretty Wings,” and “Help Somebody.”  You can pick up your copy here.

If Michael’s death has done anything for Janet, it seems it has inspired her.  She’s keeping her swagger on and her hustle going.  She blogged and bulletined the following message on her official MySpace Page yesterday about her new updated website:

Hey you guys,
Welcome, explore,
Thank you for all the love

http://www.janetjackson.com

It contains a news item about her return to her previous Tyler Perry role in the sequel to Why Did I Get Married?  Guess that answers one of the questions I posed here.  Check it out!

Bobby Pulido’s confession in the form of his answer to question Number 13 of his pop quiz below (or click here) that he has celiac disease got me to thinking.  I don’t want his answer just hanging out there without trying to do something about it.  I don’t know if indirectly he was trying to affect awareness, but, I feel I have the responsibility to try to do something positive about it since his answer appeared here on popolio.

At the very least, I can provide a link to the Celiac Disease Foundation for those who would like more information and/or for those, who like Mr. Pulido himself,  have the disease, and are in need of resources.  It’s not much, but I think it’s start in the right direction.  Hopefully, this helps.  Click the logo below to get to the site.
