popolio exists under the umbrella organization of Mandrake Arts & Media.  popolio is the latest addition to Mandrake Arts & Media.  Before popolio, Mandrake Arts & Media consisted of  Mandrake FM (which is currently being re-worked) and Mandrake Society Radio.

In conjunction with popolio’s One Year Anniversary Mixer in Austin on Friday September 18, 2009, (see the flyer here and read the press release here), we are celebrating Mandrake Society’s Radio’s 5th Season with an event in Dallas the very next evening, Saturday, September 19, 2009

Part of the idea with the Dallas event is to have it occur in the midst of the Pride festivities in D-Town.  Here are the details for Dallas’ event.

We will have live music at both events.  Austin-based Phil Dutra will be representing in the ATX while NYC artist Tim Dillinger will hold it down in D-Town.  Check Phil’s MySpace Page here and Tim’s here.

All are welcome to both events or to one or the other.  I will be at both.  Hope to see you somewhere.

Many may not know this, but popolio.com is under the umbrella of Mandrake Arts & Media which consists of mandrake society radio and mandrake FM as well as popolio.com.  The mastermind behind Mandrake Arts & Media and both those sites is J.W. Richard, who co-edits here at popolio.com.  He runs those 2 shows by himself and assists here.

Mandrake Arts & Media is a content partner with Pegasus News in Dallas and they posted an interview TODAY with Mr. J. Dub, who is based in Dallas and works with them there.  Check out the interview here to read his breakdown of Mandrake Arts & Media and to learn more about his work and our sites.

November 29, 2008 UPDATE:  It has been recently reported that shows that were previously canceled on the US leg of Janet Jacksons’ Rockwitchu Tour will, ultimately, not be rescheduled.  As an aside, I am glad that I got to see her in Dallas.

Prior speculation had been that the string of shows that were canceled had been due to low ticket sales and not because Janet was truly ill.  Don’t know if this lends credence to that theory or not.  There have been reports that new shows have been scheduled in Japan.

Lastly, I don’t want folks to sleep on this podcast.   So, that’s why I’m re-presenting it.   I think it’s an entertaining conversation between J.W. Richard (J.Dub) and myself.  Check it out!

——————–

Just hours after seeing Janet on stage for the first time, Freddie gushes about her stage performance and his favorite moments of the show.

So, I’m giving Madonna the same treatment I gave Janet.  I actually debuted this MY TOP 10 before my Janet MY TOP 10 on my MySpace Page a couple of years ago.  It’s a little late in starting because I’ve been on what I’ve been calling my own World Tour.  I was in Dallas for Janet, then I hit Vegas for a close friend’s wedding, and last week I was in the Kansas City, Missouri area for  some training for my day job.  So, I apologize for the short delay.

Consider this a countdown of sorts to my getting to see Madonna for the first time just like the Janet MY TOP 10 was.  This really started with my trying to prove to a friend that both Madonna and Janet had quality video work and that that was part of the reason they were so successful and considered legends.

After emailing him video links, I decided to do them as MY TOP 10s on my MySpace Page.  I’ll try to play catch-up and post until I get this thing back on track.  And, I’ll add new commentary as needed and as time allows.

I originally posted this on my MySpace Page on October 17, 2006.  I’m not adding anything new to this because I feel this entry sums things up pretty well.

10. “Express Yourself” from Like a Prayer Released:  May 9, 1989

“So, I was trying to prove to my friend, Jason, that Madonna is, arguably, one of the best video artists of our time.  So, I sent him a (somewhat) daily top 10 (in no particular order) about a month or two ago.

I’m going to duplicate my list here.  These are not necessarily my all-time top ten.  I just thought about showing the ones I enjoyed the most — with higher production quality and ones that displayed the quality and variety of her work.

Let me just say, that, though I am a Madonna fan, I do not think she walks on water.  I don’t agree with every move she makes and don’t like every video, song, or movie.  I like her over-all energy and how she handles things, in general.

She started around the same time MTV started and really understood the music video medium for what it was and for what it could be.  I like that she approaches her videos artistically and cinematically and doesn’t try to repeat herself.  Obviously, it facilates self-promotion, record sales, etc. as well.  And we know this fact does not escape her, either.

I think her video work is one of the reasons she has been successful for 20+ years.  This along with her reinventions through the years, her live shows, and her sexual provocation and envelope-pushing.  Oh yeah —  and there were some great pop songs along the way, too!

–Based on the 1927 sci-fi film, Metropolis.
–Notice the cinematic value, the great shooting style, the editing, etc.

Enjoy!!!”

10/18/08 UPDATE:  It’s on!
10/12/08 UPDATE:  Okay, looks like the comeback show was canceled also.  So, now I don’t know if I will get to see JJ in Dallas after all.  I’ll wait and see how things go.
10/10/08 UPDATE:  Good news for Janet and me.  Seems like Janet is feeling better and will be getting back on the road again.  So, looks like I will be able to see her on schedule after all.

So, I’ve hesitated to blog about the Janet Rock Witchu Tour and Janet’s recent illness.  Those of you that have been following our popolio R&R podcasts know that  Janet and Madonna are my 2 big shows this year.  I’ve liked both women since I was a child and seeing both live would be the fulfillment of 2 life-long dreams.

The other part of it is that as I said in my inaugural Editor’s Letter I think of popolio more as a music magazine than a blog, so I want to write these masterpieces and make sure everything is just perfect before I publish them.  But, I have a day job and a lot of the time I can only blog on weekends.  And some of that time is spent booking forthcoming posts to satiate the hunger for content out there.

I need to get over that.  I think I’m missing out on the spirit of blogging.  What’s different about this over magazines is that it is in the moment and it is “alive” and that it is fluid.

So, I’m supposed to see Ms. Jackson If You’re Nasty in Dallas in a couple of weeks.  But, if you have been keeping up she has suddenly fallen ill and has post-poned and canceled all kinds of shows.

At first, I thought maybe it was her age.  But, she’s only in her 40s.  And Madonna does it and she’s older, but she doesn’t dance as hard as Janet or as long as reports are saying she does in this show.  From what I’ve read, it sounds like it’s pretty much beginning to end.  I remember Madonna passing out a couple of tours back, but that show still went on, though.

I read JJ recently partied with JD for his latest birthday and that he hurled in her lap on the cab ride home.  Not sure if this is true, but, initially, I thought maybe she partied too hard, too, and maybe that’s why there was the first cancellation.  But, then there were more.

The other rumor permeating the internet is that she may be with child.  Not sure if that one’s true.  That would make sense.  Working that hard and being newly pregnant does seem like it could knock someone for a loop.

As a fan I do hope it’s nothing too serious and that she gets well soon.  As a fan I also want her to get well by the Dallas date, be in tip-top shape by then, and be able to give me the Janet show of my dreams.  Is that selfish?

The other thing is that I’ve already bought my plane tickets and you know how that goes.  That would just really suck.  I have the time off from work and have already ordered my tour tee online (after she fell ill; wishful ordering on my part).  So, I’m ready to get “Nasty.”  Cross your fingers for me that the show will go on and that I’ll get to take a jaunt to Planet Janet.
