Remember Eduardo Fajardo?  His band was The Executive Lifepopolio was at their debut show back in January which featured guest musician Arthur Yoria.  See the popolio pic-olios for that show here, here, and here.   They also did a pop quiz for us in April here.

Well, alas, The Executive Life is no more.  But, don’t shed too many a tear, Señor Fajardo has teamed up with Señor Yoria and these two Colombianos are now Monoceja.  They have a show next Wednesday right here in downtown ATX’s Beso Cantina.  Click the flyer to go to the so fresh, so clean Monocejo MySpace Page.

Lisa Lisa just released her first album since 1994’s LL 77.  It’s called Life N Love.  And, she’s been touring non-stop for years.  Now, her shows will include not only the ’80s hits, but this new stuff, too.

San Antonio, you’re in luck (sorry, Austin 😦  ; though, it’s not like we’re miles and miles away) — Lisa Lisa is hitting your town on Thursday, September 6, 2009, at The Industry Nightclub and you have a chance to get on her personal guest list.

Now, Lisa Lisa’s ’80s Fashion Flare Photo Contest  is open to other cities, too, but air fare is not included in the prize. You’ll have to get your own booty there if you win and don’t live in San Anto.

Check the flyer for the details and click it to go to Lisa Lisa’s Official MySpace Page Blog about the contest.  The contest ends next Tuesday, September 1, 2009, and the winner will be announced the following day, Wednesday, September 2, 2009.

LLFF80s

So, it’s been a year since I started popolio.com and kicked it of with my first MY TOP 10 Countdown in September 2008.  Since popolio.com was jumping off, I kicked it off with MY TOP 10: 90s/00s Pop/R&B Diva Music Video Jump-Offs.  Well, this is the twelfth month, so I thought it would create nice symmetry if I presented the men as a bookend to that very first countdown before Year 2 officially begins.  This time around the Div-Os, or Divos, will get the spotlight.

7. Ricky Martin “Livin’ La Vida Loca”
This man and this song is what kicked off the Latin explosion of 1999.  This is what paved the way for Number 8, Enrique Iglesias (click here), as well as Marc Anthony, J.Lo, Shakira,  Thalia and Paulina Rubio.  Though his US appeal was somewhat limited, no one made a bigger splash, at the time, than Mr. Martin.  It is from his self-titled English debut.  The BONUS is his live performance of “The Cup of Life” at the 1999 Grammys that preceded this single and set things off for him and the Latin thang’ in the US.  This performance went down in history as one of those it performances.

With this video we should be back on track starting tomorrow.

8. Enrique Iglesias “Bailamos”
This song was included in the Will Smith vehicle, Wild Wild West. It was also Mr. Iglesias first foray into the English market and it was a huge success, though the film wasn’t.  It’s sung in Spanglish and set the stage for Enrique’s debut English CD, Enrique.  This was amidst what was dubbed the Latin explosion of Latin-tinged English pop mostly by artists of Latin descent in the 1990s.  The BONUS video is “Rhythm Divine,” the first proper single from his English debut.  It was a moderate success, but not as successful as “Bailamos.”

August 5, 2009 UPDATE:  So, there was no winner for the first set of trivia questions (see below).  Had 2 people come really close, but they couldn’t get Number 1 correct.  Vallejo and Vallejo Brothers are in the question, so it is not the answer.  I’m looking for another name altogether for their cover band.

And, admittedly, I’m no mathmatician.  Originally, the first pop quiz was going to post 1 week earlier.  In doing my calendar math, I still thought I had five weeks ’til the event, but it’s only four. You’ll still get 5 pop quizzes, though.  The last 2 will just post the same day or on one day and then the next.  That would be next week for those who are good at math!  Since, it goes down next Thursday.  I’m so excited.

Anyway, I’m just going to extend the first trivia contest and, hopefully, I can get a winner.  I’m also throwing in another 3 trivia questions for 2 more FREE TICKETS.  Hopefully, folks will find these questions easier.  And, those 2 of you that came really close, can go for these, instead.

So, both contests will continue, and I need the answers by noon next Wednesday, August 12, 2009, for both set of questions.  The same person cannot win both sets of tickets.  First to get me the answers for either wins.

The second set of questions are:

1. In what year were the Premios Texas Awards presented for the very first time?

2. Premios Texas 2009 will be televised nationally on what network?

3. Which Premios Texas 2009 Nominee’s last three Spanish-language albums have all consecutively peaked at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Latin Album chart?

Remember, email the answers with your full name and a phone number to popolio[dot]com[at]gmail[dot]com.  Check out the pop quizzes and good luck!

I’m excited to announce our third official giveaway and promotion for Univision’s fifth annual Premios Texas 2009 that take place LIVE on Thursday, August 13, 2009, at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for Performing Arts at 6PM.  This is THE Latin music awards show in Texas that takes place right here in the ATX.  It will air on Univision stations throughout Texas with a “Best Of” Show scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2009

Expect performances and/or appearances by local favorites, Vallejo, as well as Latin pop star,  Olga Tañón, and Panamanian reggaetonero, Makano, to name a few.   A lot going on, so bare with me on this wordy post.

So, tickets are FREE all around, but they want REAL FANS to attend. So, though the tickets are free, you have to work for them.  You can’t just pick them up at the corner 7-11.  You have to really want them.

There will even be a RED CARPET. It’s seems to be shaping up to be quite an event.  Before I announce the ways to win tickets from popolio, let me run down all the other ways you can get yourself to the red carpet and to the show.

Now, on to the popolio contest.

CONTEST*:  I’m going to give away 2 FREE TICKETS to Premios Texas 2009 to the first person who emails me the correct answers to the following 3 trivia questions.  You get 2 weeks to do your research and get me the right answers. But, remember, first correct person wins.  The questions are:

1. The Vallejo brothers also occasionally perform as an ’80s rock cover band here in Austin.  What is the name of their ’80s cover band?

2. Premios Nominee, Reyli Barba, was the lead singer of what Latin pop rock band in the early ’90s?

3. Which Premios Nominee holds the record as the artist that has won the most Premios Los Nuestros Awards, with a total of 24?

Email the answers with your full name and a phone number to popolio[dot]com[at]gmail[dot]com by noon on  Wednesday, August 5, 2009.

Then, that same day, we’ll announce the winner of this first contest and we’ll ask 3 new trivia questions to give away 2 more FREE tickets.  Same person cannot win twice.

Short Answer
11. I make music because:  It brings me the same intense joy that I imagine a mother feels when she holds her newborn for the first time.  Of course, sometimes babies come out kinda’ scary-looking, but you love them equally knowing they’ll grow up to be beautiful!
12. I want my fans to:  Know how much I appreciate them.
13. If I could share one thing about myself it would be:  In my fantasy world I’d have a theme song playing and a bunch of backup dancers following me everywhere I went…shamon!
14. Wild Card!  The secret to good songwriting is to stay up all night singing Michael Jackson tunes while b*boys break dance to the music.  I wrote the best song of my career the next morning!

Second up is the Tejano Grammy Nominee and Edinburg, Texas’ very own hometown guy, Bobby Pulido.  Another of  the night’s performers,  he’s nominated for Best Tejano Artist.  You can vote for him here.  Not sure if he’s sharing his answer to Number 13 for the first time anywhere or if it’s information that’s already out there.  If not, I feel priveleged that he felt comfortable enough to share it here at popolio first.   A bit of a shocking “If I could share one thing about myself…”  Either way, I wish him well with that and on the music-side, much continued success.  Check out the pop quiz NOW.
